With the rise of online shopping, the popularity of mail-order mattresses is booming these days. But some people still prefer to shop in person and try the mattress out. How do you know which is right for you?

Shop online if you prefer fewer options and the convenience of not having to leave home. Some people feel overwhelmed with all the choices out there and aren't comfortable talking to a salesperson. If that's you, considering buying online and having your mattress shipped to your door.

Shop in the store if you want to see all of your options and try the mattresses before you pick one. This traditional buying route allows you to lie back and get a feeling for a mattress to give you the best experience, plus you'll have a lot more options to choose from going this route.

Whichever route you choose, it comes down to knowing your body and how you sleep. Take your time and get the best one for your preferences and budget.

So what are my preferences?

Let's start with firmness, which is will help narrow down your options quickly!

If you like a bed with some bounce then a traditional innerspring style is probably for you. They can be softer or firmer depending on the coil. Interconnected coils will be more durable but pocketed coils will produce less movement when your partner moves around at night.

If you like your mattress firm considering some memory foam options. They'll have less spring, minimal bounce, and more all-over support. And you can get more or less firmness depending on the density of the foam.

If you want a plush sleeping surface then considering a pillow-top mattress! A good innerspring mattress with a plush top is a good place to start!

How do you sleep?

If you sleep on your side, consider a supportive innerspring mattress or a soft foam mattress that can relieve pressure on your hips and shoulders.

If you sleep on your stomach, it's best to avoid a soft mattress as it'll feel like it's smothering you in your sleep! A firm foam or dense innerspring will provide the best support for this sleep position.

If you sleep on your back, you'll want something in between that’s both supportive but has some give to keep your spine and neck in healthy alignment. We recommend shopping in-person to find the right mattress that provides proper support for your body.

Choosing a mattress is a big decision for most people because they spend so much time on one. You'll spend nearly 1/3 of your life putting your mattress to use. That means you'll use your mattress more than your car, your couch, or any other type of furniture or clothing you own. So put the time into considering your sleep habits, how you want to shop, and your budget before beginning to look. Once you have those figured out, you'll be on your way to making the right choice to find the perfect mattress!
